For Immediate Release
The Ed Greenwood Group
On March 9, 2015, Trapdoor Technologies and The Ed Greenwood Group announced they were in talks to develop, create, and promote new and exciting digital experiences for lovers of roleplaying games and the novels that come with them. Today we are pleased to announce those talks have led to a signed deal. “It’s amazing what The Ed Greenwood Group is doing,” says Chris Matney, Managing Director of Trapdoor Technologies. “Greenwood has assembled some of the best tabletop gaming designers and fantasy novelists around and paired them with a slew of artists and artisans. We are excited to be able to introduce these new worlds and creations to fans and give them a whole new level of interactive digital experience.”
Trapdoor Technologies is a Colorado-based software company specializing in enhanced digital publishing. Proprietary software allows its teams to create immersive experiences for both traditional and nontraditional content. Trapdoor has developed the Playbook application—tablet-based software designed to enhance the experience of roleplaying and other tabletop games. Player tools for creating and managing characters and gamemaster tools for adventures, settings, maps, monsters, adventures, sounds, and more are to be seamlessly integrated in a real-time playing experience.
During the development of Playbook, Trapdoor Technologies began parallel creation of Storybook, an enhanced software platform for e books, which provides supportive technology for the reading experience such as sound effects, additional notes from the author, and seamless footnotes as well as additive and adaptive software that allows the reader to link information from an e-book and save it for later use in a roleplaying game.
Together both Playbook and Storybook are more than just simple templates for games and literature—they are platforms to provide additional creativity for authors and game designers and will easily incorporate enhanced content, including audio; visual (photographic and infographic); interactive puzzles and minigames; full-length roleplaying games; dice rollers; and character generators. “With our Playbook and Storybook tablet applications, Trapdoor has created a new delivery system,” says Matney. “While we are in the process of building products for other industries, it’s tabletop gaming that is in our blood.”
In March, Ed Greenwood officially announced the formation of The Ed Greenwood Group—an author- and artist-centric content creation sessorium spearheaded by The Archmage himself. The Ed Greenwood Group already hosts dozens of award-winning authors and content creators and is expected to grow throughout 2015 and beyond.
The Ed Greenwood Group’s publication schedule begins later this year in October 2015 with the launch of Hellmaw, a new urban-fantasy setting for novels, RPG (roleplaying games), traditional board games, and card games. Its launch will include a new novel by Ed Greenwood entitled Hellmaw: Your World is Doomed. The year 2016 will see the unveiling of a new endeavour using a more traditional sword-and-sorcery setting code-named Pony Island Adventures. “Trapdoor’s Storybook and Playbook software will make a perfect place for us to ‘set up shop’ to reach readers and gamers in new ways… it’s a great way to engage people in the adventures, novels, and settings,” says Greenwood.
